THE CONFUCIUS INSTITUTE AT THE UCM

The Confucius Institutes are non-profit educational institutions that, in addition to teaching Chinese language and culture, provide a platform for cultural exchange between China and the outside world. Currently, there are more than five hundred Confucius Institutes and more than one thousand Confucius Classrooms around the world.

The Confucius Institute in Bratislava (CIB) was established in 2007 through an agreement between Tianjin University and the Slovak Technical University in Bratislava, with the support of the Chinese government organization Hanban. Other partners that have been involved in the birth of the Institute or have had Chinese language teaching extended to their institutions under the auspices of the KIB are the University of Economics in Bratislava, the University of Agriculture in Nitra and the Matej Bel University in Banská Bystrica. The aim is to enable Slovak students and the public to acquire the basics of Chinese, to get to know Chinese culture and customs and to be the imaginary bridge that connects the two nations.

In 2016, the University of St. Cyril and Methodius in Trnava joined the partners of the Confucius Institute in Slovakia on the basis of the Agreement on Mutual Cooperation signed by the then Rector of UCM Dr. h. c. doc. Ing. Jozef Matúš, CSc. and the Director of the Confucius Institute in Bratislava, n.o., Ing. Petra Kotuliakova, PhD. The main idea and scope of the cooperation is not only to provide Chinese language courses at the university, but also to train local Chinese language instructors, organize exchange programs between local and Chinese students, as well as to carry out activities related to Chinese language and culture. The UCM Rector, the UCM Vice-Rector for External Relations and the UCM Department of External Relations are responsible for the cooperation from the side of our university.

In the academic year 2019/2020, the Chinese lecturer Xin Fan, with whom more than 50 students and staff of UCM studied during two academic years in the scope of two thematic courses - Chinese for Beginners and Chinese for Advanced Learners, completed his two-year stay with us. We thank you for your trust and for the work you have done, and we wish Mr. Xin Fan the best of luck in his future life.
