UCM UNITHON: Help create a new wayfinding system for our university and win1200 euros
At the hackathon, you will try to create a comprehensive and clear wayfinding system that will make it easier to navigate our campus. The winning design will receive an attractive financial prize.
UNITHON is a competition open to student teams of 3 to 6 members and will take place over the weekend of 7-9 March at the University of St. Cyril and Methodius in J. Herda Square.
The competition is primarily for UCM students. Each team must be predominantly made up of students from this university, but may also include a non-student or graduate, and at least one member must be a UCM student. It is recommended that at least one graphic designer be part of the team to help with the visual aspect of the proposal.
Competing teams should design various elements of the university wayfinding system, which include the visual identity of the wayfinding system, including color-coded building signage, consistent signage design, or iconography.
In addition, they may develop a design for exterior directional signage that provides clear identification of main entrances and information boards at buildings. Indoor wayfinding is also an important component and should include signage for corridors, classrooms, offices, toilets and lifts.
Teams can also design a digital map of the university with QR codes on entrance doors and a link to a web application with interactive navigation. Special attention can be paid to special signage for individual faculties and institutes, for example with colour differentiation or unique pictograms.
Teams will have expert mentors available to provide face-to-face or online consultation. Registration of teams is done online. Simply assemble your team and fill in the application form at this link.
Access to the premises will be available every day from 8:00 to 22:00. The best proposal will be awarded €1,200 and then implemented into practice.
Why is the new wayfinding system important?
UCM has a number of buildings spread over several addresses in Trnava, Špačince and Piešt'any, each housing different faculties, departments and administrative spaces. The current navigation system is inconsistent and can be difficult for new students or visitors.
The new system should provide:
Uniform identification of buildings and their internal spaces (classrooms, lecture halls, laboratories, offices)
Bilingual signage (Slovak + English)
Clear directional signs in the exterior and interior
Interactive digital navigation (e.g. QR codes with building maps)
Better visual differentiation of individual faculties and institutes
