English Language and Literature (Bc.)

The study of English language and literature is a language teacher's study focused primarily on the preparation of future teacher assistants, but also graduates who can find employment in other professions requiring language competence, intercultural communication, or creative and critical skills. In preparation for such professions, the study of the English language and literature program is mainly focused on linguistic, literary and cultural subjects, as well as subjects that develop pedagogical and psychological competences. The graduate should be a culturally and socially well-rounded person whose knowledge, abilities, skills and attitudes will enable him to work in schools, companies, or various educational and cultural institutions. In the bachelor's degree of education, two basic educational goals are identified: 1. To prepare the graduate of the combined teaching study program to continue in the master's study. According to Act no. 138/2019 Coll. on pedagogical employees and professional employees and on the amendment and addition of certain laws §11, the required level of education for elementary school teachers and secondary school teachers is at least a second-level university education. 2. Adequately prepare the graduate for the profession of teaching assistant.

Profile of a graduate of a bachelor's degree in education aimed at teaching assistant:

A graduate in the position of pedagogical assistant can, according to the requirements of a teacher, educator or master of vocational education and in cooperation with professional employees, create equality of opportunities in education and training, help a child, pupil or a group of children or pupils in overcoming architectural, informational, linguistic, health, social or cultural barriers.

Education outcomes in categories:

1. Knowledge: the graduate will master the knowledge of pedagogical and psychological disciplines focused on individual work with a student or a group of students with specific educational needs.

2. Skills: under the guidance of a teacher, a graduate can participate in the implementation of educational activities directly in the school environment, independently perform less demanding and auxiliary work in the educational process.

3. Professional competences: the graduate will have mainly developed competences - to identify the developmental and individual characteristics of the pupil, to identify the psychological and social factors of the pupil's learning, to identify the socio-cultural context of the pupil's development, to implement methods of working with pupils with specific educational needs, to plan and realize their professional growth and self-development, cooperate effectively with other professionals, identify with the professional role and the school.

4. Transferable competences: the graduate will have developed communication skills, organizational skills, digital skills, creativity, interpersonal skills, mentoring skills, metacognitive skills and reasoning in context, work in and with a team, the ability to handle stressful situations and obstacles, the ability adapt to changed circumstances and the ability to work in an intercultural environment.

Educational outcomes in the categories for approval English language and literature:

1. Knowledge:

The graduate has basic scientific knowledge in the profile area of ​​English language and literature and has general knowledge at the level of synthesis. He has relationally-argumentally acquired knowledge about the English language and its regularities, about the manner and conditions of its functioning in all language levels and relations to other languages, especially the Slovak language. He knows all linguistic levels of the language system of the English language, supporting data, concepts, principles and theoretical and methodological principles of linguistic and literary-scientific disciplines. He will acquire theoretical and practical knowledge of all levels of the English language and improve in all four language skills. He will acquire knowledge of British and American literature and knowledge of British and American civilization. Graduates of this study program will gain knowledge about the work of a teaching assistant when working with students with specific needs. The graduate of this study program will be able to apply the acquired knowledge in practice.

2. Skills:

The graduate knows the English language at a high practical level. He specifies and knows how to put into context knowledge from the history of the literature of English-speaking countries. He knows the basic procedures of analysis and interpretation of works of art. He/she is able to apply linguistic and literary-scientific knowledge in pragmatic-communicative activities and in teaching. He can critically analyze written and spoken speech, formulate his own opinions and attitudes, revise them critically and defend them constructively.

3. Professional competences:

The graduate has the skills of effective planning, projecting, management and organization of the educational process in teaching English language and literature. He is also characterized by creative and flexible thinking and is able to participate in work in a pedagogical team. Can professionally present own opinions and other general and professional content in English. He/she is ready for autonomous performance of his/her profession and further education and professional development. He has developed socially accepted civic attitudes and a positive attitude towards the teaching profession and the target group.

4. Transferable competences:

The graduate is able to develop his/her own language culture in the English language and to further educate himself and organize his learning. He/she is able to work with information and find historical-cultural, professional, value-moral, social, legal and economic contexts of the English language area. Able to identify and solve problems and keep in touch with current developments in the studied discipline and effectively pursue own professional development.

After completing the bachelor's education, the graduate is ready to work as a teaching assistant according to Decree no. 1/2020 Z. z. of the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sports of the Slovak Republic on the qualification requirements for teaching staff and professional staff. A graduate of the bachelor's study program English language and literature is ready to continue in the subsequent master's degree of education.

When registering the application electronically:

• the applicant is obliged to save the application uploaded in AIS (electronic application) (the status of the application "registered" is not sufficient,
• we recommend using the electronic student book. Applicants who will graduate in the academic year 2024, submit a list of grades for the 1st to 3rd year (4-year study), or for the 2nd to 4th year (5-year study). The report card from the last year and the matriculation certificate must be delivered additionally by post to the study department.
• in case the applicant does not have the possibility to use the electronic student book, it is necessary to send certified copies of the documents by post to the study department,
  in the attachment of the electronic application, the applicant uploads a CV and confirmation of payment of the fee for the admission procedure.
• the applicant, who graduated before 2024, will deliver to the Study Department (in person or by post) certified copies of the report cards for the 1st to 4th year (4-year study), or for the 2nd to 5th year (5-year study) together with the school leaving certificate.

When applying in writing:

• the application along with all mandatory attachments must be sent by mail to the address: Study Department FF UCM, Nám. J. Herdu 2, 917 01 Trnava, or hand it in at the post office,
• applicants who graduate in the academic year 2024 send the report card from the last year of study and the matriculation certificate additionally by mail.

Documentation of education obtained outside the territory of the Slovak Republic.
The applicant is obliged to submit a decision on the recognition of a document on education obtained outside the territory of the Slovak Republic no later than the day of registration.

For the study of all study programs - including the study of foreign languages ​​- knowledge of the Slovak language is required. Foreign students who do not have a high school diploma in the Slovak language or a university diploma from a Slovak university must take a language exam.

This condition does not apply to students with Czech citizenship.

It is necessary to register for the language exam in the online form no later than August 20, 2024.

Владение словацким языком требуется для всех учебных программ – включая иностранные языки. Для иностранных студентов, которые не подтверждают свой аттестат зрелости по словацкому языку или университетский диплом словацкого университета, сдача экзамена по словацкому языку является обязательной.
Это условие не распространяется на студентов с чешским гражданством.
