The specificity of our master's study program is the close combination of theoretical and practical dimensions in the field of philosophy, with the possibility of specializing either more towards theory or practice. Compulsory subjects provide the foundation for both alternatives. With the help of a suitable choice from the offer of mandatory optional subjects, students can orientate themselves either towards theoretical philosophy or towards practical (applied) philosophy. With our program, we respond to the new challenges of the XXI century. century, which brings the dynamic development of modern technologies, including gene manipulation and biotechnology, to the field of humanities.
Therefore, the Department of Philosophy and Applied Philosophy also includes the unique Center for Bioethics, which was established in June 2008 by Prof. RNDr. Peter Sýkor, PhD. as a scientific-research and pedagogical workplace with a multidisciplinary and pluralistic approach to bioethical issues. The Center for Bioethics is dedicated to research and teaching of bioethics in its broader understanding, which includes both medical and environmental ethics: https://centreforbioethics.sk/
The specificity of our study program is the emphasis on the development of critical thinking. In several compulsory subjects (biomedical ethics 1; biomedical ethics 2; human nature; philosophy of mind), students become familiar with different forms of argumentation and learn to critically evaluate individual argumentation approaches. Students will thus learn to argue and discuss in oral or written communication.
In addition, we also pay attention to the language skills of the students, which is why there is a lot of recommended literature for compulsory as well as compulsory optional subjects mainly of English or German language provenance.
