Biotechnology (Bachelor's)
- Field of study: biotechnology
- Form of study: FULL-TIME
- Degree of study: 1st, bachelor
- Duration of study: 3 years
- Language of instruction: English and Slovak
At the time of graduation, students of the biotechnology study program have the following theoretical knowledge, practical abilities and skills:
- Basics of chemistry (general, inorganic, organic, analytical, physical, biochemistry), biology (microbiology and molecular), genetics, biotechnology (microbial, agricultural, enzyme and environmental), ecology, but also mathematics, physics and statistical analysis. In their bachelor's studies, they already acquire knowledge from selected, specialized areas, for example, virology, food quality, nutrition, toxicology, bioinformatics, scientific databases. They acquire or they improve their knowledge and practice in science English.
- They acquire habits for defining scientific hypotheses, preparing (experimental) projects for their verification, experimental solutions, defining outputs and characterizing them, presenting, defending and implementing them (also in practice).
- Bachelor's degree graduates have theoretical knowledge of the structures of prokaryotic and eukaryotic biological systems and the essence of the processes (physicochemical, biochemical and physiological) taking place in them as well as the mechanisms of their regulation. They get an overview of them and know how to apply them in practice. They know the basics of methods of intervention in the genome of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, the principles of genetic modification of organisms, the basic methods of characterizing genetic changes and gain an overview of the use of genetically modified organisms in various areas of practice.
- They are able to prepare biological systems for their practical use and independently solve (manage) partial operations related to their targeted use in the agricultural-food, pharmaceutical-medical and chemical-environmental fields. They have sufficient theoretical knowledge and practical experience necessary to carry out laboratory control and evaluate the data obtained and can communicate with an equivalent level of management. They possess knowledge of the economic, legal, ethical and environmental aspects of biotechnologies, which enable them to apply themselves at the middle level of functional activities in the scientific-research, production-business sphere.
Graduates of the bachelor's study program in biotechnology are employed in chemical, pharmaceutical, medical, environmental research and operational facilities, in the production sphere in monitoring the natural environment, processing and using databases.Professions where a graduate can apply are, for example:
- laboratory technician in various departments (biochemistry, microbiology, etc.),
- chemical production operator,
- raw material intake worker, fermenter/distiller production worker,
- production technician and more.
90% of students continue their university studies at the 2nd level in the field of biotechnology or in one of the related fields.
Admission Requirements for Full-Time and Part-Time Study.
Applicant Requirements, Selection Process, and Recommended Personal Attributes
Number of students admitted to the study program: 50
The basic condition for admission to the bachelor's program is obtaining a complete secondary education or complete secondary vocational education (§ 56, paragraph 1 of Act No. 131/2002 Coll. on Higher Education and on Amendments to Certain Acts).
The admission process will be conducted without an entrance exam.
For admission to the bachelor's study program, the applicant's performance during secondary school will be the determining factor. More information here.
