Biotechnology (Master's)
- Field of study: biotechnology
- Form of study: FULL-TIME
- Degree of study: 2nd, Master's
- Duration of study: 2 years
- Language of instruction: Slovak
Students of the biotechnology study program have the following theoretical knowledge, practical abilities and skills at the time of completion:
- He will acquire adequate knowledge of basic natural science disciplines, mainly biotechnology, biology and chemistry, as well as their border areas. Due to the fact that the program fits into the study field of Biotechnology, it is primarily about subjects emphasizing biotechnology aspects. An important content part of the study, in addition to classic chemical and biological subjects, is the emphasis.
- For biotechnological disciplines such as industrial biotechnologies, nanobiotechnologies, molecular biotechnologies, but also modern biological disciplines that are the basis for modern biotechnologies, such as molecular-biological techniques, instrumental methods of analysis, biofuels and products from renewable sources, new and functional foods and others .
- Continuity with ecological and environmental disciplines and subjects including the issue of sustainable development in close connection with regional specifics.
Due to the wider applicability of the graduate in practice, the natural science and technological basis of the study is complemented by selected legislative-legal, ethical and managerial disciplines. Studying in the second degree simultaneously creates prerequisites for continuing in the third degree.
Students of the biotechnology study program have the following theoretical knowledge, practical abilities and skills at the time of completion:
- They acquire habits for defining scientific hypotheses, preparing (experimental) projects for their verification, experimental solutions, defining outputs and characterizing them, presenting them, defending them and implementing them (also in practice).
- Graduates of the master's degree have theoretical knowledge of the structures of prokaryotic and eukaryotic biological systems and the nature of the processes (physico-chemical, biochemical and physiological) taking place in them as well as the mechanisms of their regulation. They gain an overview of them and know how to apply them in practice. They know the methods of intervention in the genome of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, the principles of genetic modification of organisms, methods of characterizing genetic changes and gain an overview of the use of genetically modified organisms in various fields of practice.
- They are able to carry out the preparation of biological systems for their practical use and independently solve (manage) partial operations related to their targeted use in the agricultural-food, pharmaceutical-medical and chemical-environmental fields.
- They have sufficient theoretical knowledge and practical experience necessary to carry out laboratory control and evaluate the obtained data and can communicate with an equivalent level of management.
- They possess knowledge of the economic, legal, ethical and environmental aspects of biotechnologies, which enable them to apply themselves at the intermediate level of functional activities in the scientific research, production and business sphere.
A graduate of the study program is an expert who finds employment in various areas of social practice. Acquire knowledge from biotechnology and related fields (especially biological, chemical, genetic and their specializations) conditioning the development of biotechnology, especially in the so-called white, green and red biotechnologies. He is able to engage in research, development and innovation directed mainly to industry, agriculture, healthcare, the environment, energy, as well as apply his knowledge directly in production practice in these areas.
- they are able to investigate biomolecules and biological systems, as well as to use them practically
- they can independently manage individual operations related to their targeted use in the agricultural-food, pharmaceutical-medical and chemical-environmental fields, as well as in the field of industrial use of renewable raw materials
- they have enough theoretical knowledge and practical experience necessary to carry out laboratory and production activities and evaluate the obtained data and they know how to communicate with an equivalent level of management
- they also have knowledge of the economic, legal, ethical and environmental aspects of biotechnologies, which enable them to apply themselves at the intermediate level of functional activities in scientific research, but also in the production and business sphere.
- scientific research worker
- laboratory diagnostician
- laboratory technician in various departments (biochemistry, microbiology, etc.)
- product specialist
- chemical production operator
- raw material intake worker
- fermenter/distiller production worker
- production technician
- quality controller
- specialist in research and development
- technologist
- agronomist
- sanitation and hygiene specialist
Admission Requirements for Full-Time and Part-Time Study.
Applicant Requirements, Selection Process, and Recommended Personal Attributes
Number of students admitted to the study program: 30
The basic condition for admission to the study of the second degree study program is the completion of the first degree study program (according to § 56 paragraph 2 of Act No. 131/2002 Coll. on Universities and on Amendments and Supplements to Certain Acts).
The admission procedure takes place without an entrance exam.
When being admitted to the chosen study program, the fact is taken into account whether the applicant completed the study program at FPV UCM in Trnava or at another university of a related field. The result of the bachelor's study is evaluated during admission to the master's study program. In the case of applicants from other faculties and completing a bachelor's degree in related fields, the composition of completed subjects in the first degree is also evaluated. In the case of completing a bachelor's degree in related fields, the FPV admissions committee may require admission exams. More information here.
