Environmental Protection and Restoration (Bachelor's)
- Field of study: ecological and environmental sciences
- Form of study: FULL-TIME
- Degree of study: 1st, bachelor
- Duration of study: 3 years
- Teaching language: Slovak
A graduate of the Environmental Protection and Restoration study program has adequate theoretical knowledge of all basic natural science disciplines, which are prerequisites for studying in the field of ecological and environmental sciences. This is knowledge of environmental studies, chemistry, physics, mathematics, biology, geography and ecology, he also masters laboratory techniques and basic laboratory methodologies in the above disciplines, he is familiar with the chemical, physical and biological aspects of phenomena that are the subject of conservation studies and environmental restoration and is computer proficient in the use of commercial software applied in obtaining and processing data related to environmental assessment, planning experiments and processing and presenting results, as well as mastering basic programming methods.
The graduate has appropriate competences and skills, namely in a wide range of activities including measurement and monitoring of analytical characteristics of individual components of the environment, application of (bio)remediation (remediation) technologies, molecular biology methods, environmental consulting in a wide range of institutions, including the business sphere, work in teams implementing exploration and research activity in the protection and restoration of the environment. He also knows how to effectively adapt to the increasing and changing demands of practice, including the solution of his further education in the form of continuation of the 2nd degree of university studies, in a wide range of environmental engineering and chemical technology study programs. The graduate has basic knowledge prerequisites for professional communication in the English language.
Completing the study program will enable a recent graduate of bachelor's studies to be able to get a suitable job right after graduation, but at the same time to have the widest possible opportunities to continue on the 2nd degree of university studies with the prospect of also completing the 3rd degree of university studies.
Learning objectives and graduate profile
Students of the Environmental Protection and Restoration study program have knowledge about the effects of physico-chemical and anthropogenic factors on the environment, they will acquire basic skills for detecting and monitoring their impacts, competences for evaluating the quality of the environment, or identification of possible solutions for its remediation. In each semester, a significant space is created for the inclusion of students in laboratory work and field monitoring work, which are aimed at acquiring skills and as early as possible independent work in solving the topics of final theses.
A graduate of the Environmental Protection and Restoration study program has the prerequisites to apply in:
- various environmental and sanitation control facilities
- operational and research focus and perform more demanding work, primarily of a technical nature (e.g. in waste water treatment plants, at the workplaces of the Slovak Environmental Inspectorate, at the workplaces of the Office of Public Health),
- also in state and public administration as a worker in the field of environmental informatics and environmental legislation (e.g. at district and regional environmental offices, at the Environmental Fund).
Graduates can apply themselves in geoinformatics, specifically in the field of spatial geographic data processing to obtain information of a natural and social nature, in consulting activities on environmental issues for a wide range of entrepreneurs, but can also continue in higher degrees of university studies.
