University and faculty insignia are an expression of university identity, represented in ceremonial rituals by the awarding of academic ranks and honours. As symbols of belonging and respect for the values of education, they follow the historical tradition of European universities, whose faculties have had their own flags, seals, scepters, chains, gowns or commemorative medals. Insignia are attributes of the dignity of academic offices and emblems of the academic rights, duties and freedoms entrusted to them. Decorated academic dignitaries thus represent their university status and rank, following the tradition of higher education.
The litany of academic insignia highlights the pomp, dignity, and extraordinary impact of university ceremonies and festivities.
An essential part of university ceremonies is the dressing of academic officials in ceremonial robes - TALARS, which are a symbol of status honour and belonging. The representative attire emphasises the grandeur of university rituals and underlines their exceptional, unique atmosphere. The gowns are festive attire. The distinctive design of each presents individual academic dignitaries who, in the context of their function, are entitled to wear ceremonial robes in the chosen act.
The University of St. Cyril and Methodius in Trnava also maintains the custom of dressing in gowns and berets during academic ceremonies. The most lavish, and therefore unmistakable, are the gowns of the rector and vice-rectors. A typical feature of the deans' gowns is the decoration of the robes with 'leggings', i.e. coloured stripes applied to the shoulders of the garments in the respective colours of the individual faculties, which uniquely identify these institutions.
The colour symbolism of the individual faculties is as follows: the Faculty of Philosophy is blue (FF Pool), the Faculty of Mass Communication is magenta (FMK Magenta), the Faculty of Natural Sciences is green (FPV Eucalyptus), the Faculty of Social Sciences is orange (FSV Mango), the Faculty of Health Sciences is red (FZV Rose) and the Institute of Management is purple (IM Purpureus). The gowns of the UCM academic dignitaries are made mostly of velvet and brocade.
